Tbilisi was founded in the 5th century by the king of Georgia Vakhtang I Gorgasali (452-502).
According to the legend, King Vakhtang Gorgasali, about 1500 years ago, shot down a beautiful deer in a mountain valley. The animal fell into a spring. Suddenly it leaped out of the water and to the king’s astonishment, bounded away as swift as an arrow. The water in the spring was warm and seemed to possess a mysterious healing power. The king ordered a town to be built there and it was named Tbilisi, from the word "tbili” meaning warm.

The city stands on the banks of the River Mtkvari, in the valley surrounded by hills. It is best seen from the top of mount Mtatsminda. With its warm climate, stone houses built around vine-draped courtyards, and winding streets, Tbilisi has a lively, Mediterranean atmosphere. The old city, spreading out from the right bank of the river, has numerous frescoed churches (the most noteworthy being the six-century Sioni Cathedral ), 19th-century houses with arcaded open galleries on the apper floors, a castle and surprising number of cafes and enticing tourist shops selling locally produced arts and crafts.

Rustaveli Avenue, Tbilisi’s main thoroughfare, features an assortment of stylish public buildings testifying to the city’s prosperity at the turn of the century.
The Georgian State Museum on Rustaveli Avenue houses a collection of icons, frescoes and porcelain, as well as an outstanding display of jewellery discovered in pre-Christian Georgian tombs.
The Georgian Museum of Arts, in the center of the city, includes many works by the much-loved 19th-century "primitive” artist, Niko Pirosmani.
The Narikala Fortress, firs established in the fourth century AD and most recently rebuilt in the 17th century, is a good vantage point for views over the old city.

Mountainous Georgia from Tusheti to Khevsureti

Day 1 – From Tbilisi drive to Kakheti region, on the way visit Sighnaghi old-city, Bodbe monastery, fortified medieval citadel of Gremi, Gurjaani Kvelatsminda church, stay overnight at the guesthouse Vazisubani near Telavi.

Day 3 - Visit architectural complex of Alaverdi, ancient academy of Ikalto and Shuamta monasteries. Vardzia Cave Town in Georgia

The Cave City of Vardzia is a cave monastery in southern

Georgia

near Aspindza. It was founded by Queen Tamar in 1185. The monastery was constructed as protection from the Mongols. and consisted of over six thousand apartments in a thirteen story complex. The city included a church, a throne room, and a complex irrigation system watering terraced farmlands. The only access to the complex was through some well hidden tunnels near the Mtkvari River. In the modern days Cave Town of Vardzia is a major tourist attraction in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia.

BTK railway line connects: Baku (Azerbaijan) - Tbilisi (Georgia ) - Kars (Turkey)

The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway line will connect Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan. The total estimated cost of the project is $600 million and must be completed by the end of 2012.

This Project will improve trade and economic relations between this three Caucasus Countries as well as gaining foreign direct investment by connecting Europe and Asia.

Construction work on the project began in 2007, but in 2009, the construction activities of the BTK railway line were suspended due to the Georgian-Ossetian conflict and some technical problems.

Like a tender whisper or like a tremendous roar, the ancient Georgian folk songs fill the air.
For at least one thousand years, the polyphonous song has been a natural part of life in this country south of Caucasus. The Georgian people have always been singing during labour in the fields, at weddings and funerals, at parties and in wartime...
There are even serious music researchers who state that once upon a time, the Georgians taught our ancestors in the West to sing polyphonic songs. In Georgia, it is above all men, who sing polyphonic songs. There are also many folk songs for female voices, but there are no mixed choirs in traditional Georgian music.
Roughly speaking, Georgian can be divided into a West Georgian and an East Georgian tradition. In East Georgia, it is very common that two solo performers weave their richly ornamented parts together, carried by the flexible bordun voices of the other singers.
In West Georgia, the polyphony is more refined. In a westerners ear, the songs may often sound rather chaotic at first, with three or four voices living their own lives with no traditionally harmonious connection.
However, there are leading people in the West, who have declared that these songs, from a composition-technical point of view, are equivalent to the most refined works by Bach and Beethoven.
In West Georgian music, you may also often hear the unique krimanchuli song. Krimanchuli is a form of yodeling in an extremely high tone. The technique is very arduous and the best krimanchili singers are highly esteemed in Georgia. You may often listen to real championships when the singers try to surpass each other with the most outrageous musical excesses.

The pass of Mamisony - Is located in the central range of the Caucasus. On the watershed of the Ardony and Chanchaxi Rivers. Length 2619 meter. There are sub alpine and alpine zones.

Shovi - Is located in 1520 meter reduced from the level of the sea and 30 kilometer from Oni. There are Carbon dioxide - hydro carbonate, Natrium, Calcium mineral spring waters.

Utsera - The resort in the municipality of Oni. Reduction from the level of the sea 1050 meter, from Ony 10 kilometers way. It is rich with mineral waters. There is St. Maria church in the territory of resort X-XI Century. the church has been rebuilt in 1992-2002.

The museum of architecture - Is located in Oni, built in 1952 by cultural workers of Georgia. In the museum are kept all about 14000 major and additional exponents.

Georgia's economy sustained GDP growth of close to 10% in 2006 and 12% in 2007, based on strong inflows of foreign investment and robust government spending. However, growth slowed to less than 7% in 2008 and is expected to slow further in 2009. Georgia's main economic activities include the cultivation of agricultural products such as grapes, citrus fruits, and hazelnuts; mining of manganese and copper; and output of a small industrial sector producing alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, metals, machinery, aircraft and chemicals. The country imports nearly all its needed supplies of natural gas and oil products. It has sizeable hydropower capacity, a growing component of its energy supplies. Areas of recent improvement include growth in the construction, banking services, and mining sectors, but reduced availability of external investment and the slowing regional economy are emerging risks. Georgia has historically suffered from a chronic failure to collect tax revenues; however, the government has made great progress and has reformed the tax code, improved tax administration, increased tax enforcement, and cracked down on corruption since coming to power in 2004. Government revenues have increased nearly four fold since 2003. Due to improvements in customs and tax enforcement, smuggling is a declining problem. Georgia has overcome the chronic energy shortages of the past by renovating hydropower plants and by bringing in newly available natural gas supplies from Azerbaijan, signing a Memorandum of Understanding and gas supply agreements in Fall 2008. It also has an increased ability to pay for more expensive gas imports from Russia. The country is pinning its hopes for long-term growth on a determined effort to reduce regulation, taxes, and corruption in order to attract foreign investment, but the economy faces a more difficult investment climate both domestically and internationally. The construction on the Baku-T'bilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, the Baku-T'bilisi-Erzerum gas pipeline, and the Kars-Akhalkalaki Railroad are part of a strategy to capitalize on Georgia's strategic location between Europe and Asia and develop its role as a transit point for gas, oil and other goods.

Exhibition of works by Pablo Picasso is coming to Georgia

For the first time Pablo Picasso exhibition is coming to Georgia. In result of the collaboration between Georgian National Museum and the Ion Department of France, Picasso masterpieces will be exhibited in Georgia from 30th May to 6th September 2009:
30 May - 23 June in Signagi;
28 June - 2 August in Tbilisi;
8 August - 6 September in Batumi.

The unique works of Picasso from private collections never left the Zervo Museum in France. They will be exhibited in Georgia in exchange to the exhibition of Niko Pirosmani masterpieces which has received great response in France.

Day 1: Meeting and accommodation at Tbilisi Hotel Georgian House. Day 5. Start Armenian program in Alaverdi and drive to Yerevan, excursion to Matenadaran Institute of ancient manuscripts, fortress of Garni (I c. BC), Geghard monastery cut in the rock (XII - XIII cc.), Gehatavank monastery, leisure afternoon in Yerevan: a walk in the city, shopping, stay overnight in Yerevan.

Day 6. Monastery of Echmiadzin (II c.), basilica of St. Gayane, church of St. Ripsime (XII c.), ruins of Zvartnots temple (VII c.), Khor-Virap, Noravanq Monastery Complex. Drive to the Lake Sevan and stay overnight there.

Day 7. Drive to Georgia via Bolnisi Sioni and Dmanisi - centre of sensational excavations of the “birthplace of the first European human species”. Visit East Georgia, wine Region – Kakheti: fortified city of Sighnaghi, medieval citadel of Gremi, Alaverdi monastery (XI c.) and stay overnight in Telavi.

Day 8. Visit Shuamta Monastery Complex (IV - VII c.), ancient Akademy of Ikalto, Tsinandali wine-cellar, shashlik picnic with Georgian wine and drive to Tbilisi, leisure afternoon in the capital: shopping in the city and a walk along the Rustaveli Avenue. Stay overnight in Tbilisi.

Hyatt Tbilisi is being constructed in Tbilisi and will be finished by December 2009. The proposed hotel development will be part of a mixed-use project comprising office, hotel, conference facilities and spa and leisure components. The project will consist of five separate building structures including a five-star hotel with 183 keys, food and beverage facilities comprising a fine dining restaurant, brasserie, juice bar and a hotel bar, approximately 70 units of serviced apartments to be located within hotel tower building - on the top floors.

The capital of Georgia, Tbilisi is one of the ancient cities of the world, situated in the valley of the river Mtkvari. The bridges connect the right and left banks of the city. The place was populated since ancient times, as far as four thousand years BC. During its long and complicated history the city appeared the place of incessant dramatic juxtaposition of a number of various nations and cultures.

The territory of present-day Tbilisi and its suburbs was populated four or five centuries ago. There are a multitude of churches and historic monuments in the old part of the town, as well as many museums, narrow streets and old houses with the characteristic wooden balconies, wide and open. The statue of Mother of Georgia, overlooking the city from the mountain ridge, attracts attention: welcoming its guests with a bowl of wine in one hand, and a sword in another for the enemies, the statue represents the symbol of Georgia. Once in Tbilisi, guests can see the Church of Anchiskhati (6th c.), Sioni Cathedral (7th c.), the Narikala fortress (4th c.), a synagogue, a mosque, a few museums (history museum, and an open-air ethnography museum and the funicular make the musts for visitors of the city). Among other tourists’ diversions are visits to souvenir shops, fairs, theatres, modern movie theatres, restaurants, bars, cafes, fitness-centres and the notorious sulphur spring-baths.

The legend of Tbilisi foundation: Once, while hunting in the dense woods on the territory of modern Tbilisi, King Vakhtang Gorgasali who loved falconry pursued a pheasant. His falcon chased the bird but soon the king lost the sight of both of them. Then the royal suite found the birds in the pool of a sulphur spring. As he found the spring hot, King Vakhtang decided to call this place Tbilisi (“tbili” meaning warm in Georgian). Soon the king founded the city of Tbilisi, where the capital of Georgia was moved to in the 5th c. AD.

Day 1: Tbilisi - David Gareja – Telavi
Today we have excursion to David Gareji Monastery. The Monastery is situated in Gareji semi-desert, 75km southeast from Tbilisi.
We’ll visit the two complexes – David’s Lavra – the very first to have been established by holy father – David. The Lavra monastery complex beneath of the sandstone rock is definitely worth a visit, and even more so a hike (two hours) up to the Udabno monastery. There, at the edge of the natural border between Georgia and Azerbaijan, you may marvel at the frescos from 9th up to 14th century that strike the visitor with their well-preserved colors.

Day 2: Telavi – Kakheti region - Tbilisi
In the morning visiting a peasant family, tasting of chacha and home-made wine. Drive to Gremi fortress (16th-17th centuries), the church of Gremi is one of the most magnificent centre-cupola buildings of the later period. (King of Kakheti, Levan, built the complex of the churches of Archangel in the centre of the town 1565).
Visit Tsinandali, the residence of Prince Alexandre Chavchavadze (18t-19th centuries).We also see beautiful garden and old wine cellars. Testing old wines in local cellars.
